Red mites visit your chickens on the perch every night. The animals drink themselves full of blood and go back to their hiding place. The consequences for your poultry are serious. Your chickens can become seriously anaemic and even die from it. But red mites also cause a reduced egg production. Young chickens are particularly susceptible to these mites, which hide in all the cracks and seams of your chicken coop.

Total solution for red mite control

Olba has been working on a total solution for this problem for years. And that has worked out extremely well with the Anti-Red Mite Kit! “Preventing red mite from moving between the chickens and the rest of the coop. That was our main goal in developing this product,” says Olba’s director Douwe Oldenbanning. “We also started testing individual trays as they are currently sold on the market. Unfortunately, this was not very practical. Because the trays were open, manure and dirt could get into them. In addition, the red mites could still reach the chickens through the wall to which the perch is attached.”

Rotating red mite trays and wall brackets

Olba therefore continued testing the red mite trays and developed the Anti-Red Mite Kit. Oldenbanning: “The kit consists of two rotatable trays. Because they can be rotated, they can be filled with oil very easily and there will be no mess. We have also added two long wall brackets with press nut and fixing material to the kit. It is very important that there is a minimum distance of 8cm between the perch and the wall of the henhouse. This is the only way to prevent the red mites from reaching the chickens.

Olba’s Anti Red Mit Kit is easy to use

Attaching Olba’s Anti Red Mite Kit is easy. The rotating trays can be filled for three quarters with the oil of your choice. The oil will prevent the mites from reaching the chickens. It is important to check the trays regularly. If you see any red mites, it is wise to treat the rest of the henhouse as well (for instance with diatomaceous earth). And of course you also want to make sure that there is always enough oil in the red mites trays. This way you can be sure that this natural way of fighting is very effective.
